Community support and events:

There are many ways to get to get helpful information and support.  Some are local face to face and some are via the web.  Either way its great to have a support system behind you.  Here are some places locally and through the web.

Nebraska Chapter of the Autism Society of America supports and advocates for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families.

The Autism Society – Omaha Support Network provides advocy, education, support, and social events in the Omaha Metro.

The Autism Society of Nebraska provides support and advocacy for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families

The Autism Action Partnership offers education, advocacy and support to persons on the Autism Spectrum and their families, thereby enabling them to be an integral part of the community.

  • Parent Training Information- Nebraska (PTI Nebraska) is a professional parent consultant group that provides parents free information and support regarding parent education, program eligibility, health insurance access, and community resources. Representatives from PTI can be reached at (402) 346-0525 or www.pti-nebraska.org.
  • The Munroe-Meyer Institute hosts educational events and trainings for families of children with autism or other developmental disabilities. For updates, follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/MunroeMeyerInstitute
  • Community Autism Resource Education (CARE) Program provides a jump-start to accessing support and resources for children with Autism and their families. Connect with experts in the Autism community. By the end of these meetings, you will have an early intervention tool kit for understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder; teaching communication; managing problematic behaviors; and community/school resources.   • Maggie Neujahr, CSW. Maggie is a Certified Social Worker that provides families with resources and support after receiving a psychological diagnosis. Maggie provides families with help with the following services/supports: access to community resources, assistance filing for supports from the state of Nebraska and any other supports your family may need.   • The Munroe-Meyer Institute Virtual Care program provides free on-line training materials for care providers. Training areas cover a wide range of behavioral principles and proactive and reactive strategies. To access materials, please contact Dr. Kevin Luczynski at (402) 559-4056.
  • Radical Minds provides trainings on a variety of topics. Trainings focus on applied behavior analysis (ABA) strategies. For information on upcoming trainings, follow Radical Minds on Facebook at /www.facebook.com/radicalmindsomaha/

  • Child Health Specialty Clinics through the University of Iowa. Call 866-219-9119 to get connected with your regional center to enquire about resources in your community (e.g., behavioral therapy)
  • RAP (Regional Autism Assistance Program) and Family Navigators. Ask Resource Center. https://www.askresource.org/

National Caregiver Help

  • The Vanderbilt TRIAD center’s online modules provide parent-focused modules on Autism as well as general behavioral strategies. Theses modules are self-paced and include video examples of parents with their childnre.  If you click on the “Click hear for Caregivers” icon you should be prompted to sign up for a (free) account. This should lead you to a page with a variety of different web modules and videos about common topics for children with developmental delays/disabilities and their caregivers. https://triad.vkclearning.org/
  • The Verbal Behavior Approach is a book by Mary Barbera, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and parent of a child with Autism. This book is ideal for individuals with limited or emerging communication skills and provides a guide to develop communication, reduce problem behavior, and increase self-care  (e.g., toileting). The book costs approximately $15 on Amazon.com. Dr. Barbera also offers free parent webinars and podcasts from time to time at www.marybarbera.com/

  • Utah State University offers a free online course by Dr. Glenn Latham titled Power of Positive Parenting. The course consists of 27 modules that address general behavior management strategies (e.g., proactive responding, reinforcing appropriate behaviors) and specific concerns (e.g., time-out, tantrums, stealing).   • Autism Speaks is an autism science and advocacy organization dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. General Behavior Management Resources:

  • The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child by Alan Kazdin is a book that addresses concerns related to parenting children who exhibit defiance and/or noncompliance. Topics covered include tantrums, time-outs, punishments fitting the crime, how to use tone of voice, when and how to touch, how to lead your child in a “practice” session, how to adjust your approach for different ages, and how to involve siblings. The book is available for approximately $11 on Amazon.com.
  •  The Everyday Parenting Toolkit by Alan Kazdin is a book that addresses problems that plague parents on a day-to-day basis: from getting ready for school on time to expanding the palates of picky eaters to limiting computer time. The methods in the book foster positive child-parent relationships and lifelong positive skills such as respectfulness, honesty, kindness, and altruism. It is available for approximately $10 on Amazon.com.
